Locals and visitors gather for open-air picnics and parties, called <em>hanami<\/em>, to take in the natural splendor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">March sees the annual Tokyo Marathon and St Patrick&#8217;s Day parade roll into town, as well as the celebration of Hina Matsuri (Girls\u2019 Day), where public spaces and homes are decorated with<em> o-hina-sama<\/em> (princess) dolls in traditional royal dress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">Warmer weather and spring blooms \u2013 from floating <em>sakura<\/em> to tumbling wisteria \u2013 make April quite simply a fantastic month to be in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">Celebrating the arrival of spring-proper, spirited parties accompany the ritual of <em>hanami <\/em>(cherry blossom viewing) in parks like Ueno-k\u014den, Yoyogi-k\u014den, and Inokashira-k\u014den \u2013 get down early to guarantee a spot on the parks\u2019 extensive lawns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">The month of May is also marked by \u014cgon Sh\u016bkan (Golden Week), which sees a number of significant holidays take place, giving the city an added buzz. The O-Bon national holidays mean attractions popular with students and families will be crowded, while accommodation will likely be pricey.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">Asagaya&#8217;s Tanabata festival sees Tokyo\u2019s signature <em>sh\u014dtengai <\/em>(shopping arcade), Pearl Centre, decked out with colorful lanterns and papier-m\u00e2ch\u00e9 decorations (some with cheeky pop culture references).<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">The twice-annual <em>Comiket<\/em> (Comic Market) also rolls into town in August, a highlight of the year for major manga fans. O-tori shrines such as Hanazono-jinja hold fairs called Tori-no-ichi where vendors sell <em>kumade<\/em> \u2013 stylized rakes that literally symbolize &#8220;raking in the wealth&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">Meanwhile people gather to watch the city\u2019s trees undergo magnificent seasonal transformations during <em>k\u014dy\u014d <\/em>(autumn foliage season). Rikugi-en, Koishikawa K\u014drakuen, and Hama-riky\u016b Onshi-teien are three favorite local viewing spots.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">In November, the city\u2019s parks, gardens, and high streets are painted in fiery hues as deciduous trees \u2013 ginkgo, momiji, maple, zelkova, and more \u2013 bid their leaves adieu. However, it\u2019s worth noting many businesses close over the New Year period.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">It\u2019s also quite cold, though frequent clear blue skies mean snow-decked Mt Fuji is particularly beautiful at this time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">The height of the rainy season, usually arriving in mid-June to mid-July, is another low season for tourism in Tokyo, but the damp conditions are not great for sightseeing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"text-md my-6 text-black-400\">Early June is lovely, though by the end of the month <em>tsuyu <\/em>(the rainy season) sets in.
